About MUES

Masaryk University Economic Seminars (MUES) offer a valuable platform for researchers, students, and other attendees to present and discuss economic research. We believe that seminar discussions are a great way to improve research outcomes and stimulate academic life in Brno. Please refer to the google calendar for a complete list of upcoming events, or sign up for our weekly newsletter to receive invitations to MUES events.

Leading international scholars

Research Seminar Series offers a unique opportunity for our Faculty to engage with leading international scholars. Distinguished researchers from the world's top universities are invited to present their latest research and engage in lively discussions on the latest trends and developments in various areas of economics. All seminars are conducted in English and are comprised of a 50-minute presentation followed by a 10-minute discussion session. These seminars are open to the public, and we warmly welcome spontaneous attendance.

Local researchers present their work

Internal Research Seminars provide an informal forum for local researchers to present their work in progress and receive feedback and criticism from colleagues. Speakers present preliminary findings of their research (ideally with paper draft available). Talks should last no longer than 30 minutes, leaving ample time for discussion. All interested parties are welcome to attend, and we encourage participants to bring their own lunch or sandwich. Small sandwiches will be provided before the seminar from 12:00 to 12:15. Talk will start at 12:15. If you wish to present your work, please drop us an email.

Popular topics in the field of economic research

Public lectures are hosted by distinguished speakers who present on popular topics in the field of economic research and policy making. These events provide an excellent opportunity for students and researchers to enhance their understanding of economics.
Join us at our next seminar and be a part of these engaging discussions!

Fun facts

On October 3, 2013, Filip Pertold was the very first guest invited to the MUES Seminar.
Exactly ten years later, on October 3, 2023, we welcomed Filip Pertold back to the MUES Seminar.

In 2024, we hosted 37 MUES research seminars with external guests—the highest number in the seminar’s history!

Stephanie Peer holds the record for the highest presence at the MUES Seminar, having presented three times—in 2013, 2018, and 2024.

We love sharing invited speakers with universities in Prague, Vienna, and Bratislava. David Neumark gave public lectures in both Bratislava and Brno. Lata Gangadharan visited CERGE-EI in Prague and then Brno, and we also hosted David Hugh-Jones after his seminar at VŠE in Prague.

Since 2024, MUES seminars have been held regularly on Thursdays at 14:00 during the semester.
Previously, the schedule was flexible.

Since the start of the MUES seminars, we have invited each speaker to a group lunch or dinner—special thanks to the faculty deans for financially supporting these gatherings.

The MUES Seminar started back in 2013 as a joint effort of Masaryk University and Mendel University. Between 2013 and 2017, we welcomed 50 guest speakers in Brno, with seminars alternating equally between the two faculties.
